Stay-cation Photo Safari Day 3

All Aboard the L&N Line to Stanford, KY!!

Today I decided to get started in Danville, KY. It's a little like taking pictures of animals in the zoo, but that can be fun too. After some fun shots I decided to follow the line south. Soon I got hungry and decided to abandon the trail and find food. That mission lead me to Stanford, KY where I stumbled across the old L&N depot turned museum. Stanford was the highlight of today's trip. I highly recommend a visit.

Stay-cation Photo Safari Day 2

Today I stayed in familiar territory, but I covered quite a bit of ground. Best of all, I did it all on my motorcycle! That's how I roll. Making the most of a short vacation by doing two of my favorite things at once. If only I could eat pizza while riding my bike...

Today's safari took me to High Bridge and Wilmore. A beautiful ride pretty much any time of the year.

A short wait at High Bridge yielded a nice prize. I wanted to get a train headed toward me coming across the bridge. I have several shots of trains going the other way. Today I got two Norfolk Southern engines headed toward Lexington. It was just me and a nice couple (also on a motorcycle) there. They were kind enough to step back when I started shooting, so I got several unobstructed shots.

I rediscovered an old mill across the tracks in Wilmore. And I made a new friend who told me all about the Mill, and the town's history over the last 47 years. Turns out the mill has been shut down for years, but the decision was recently made to restart it. The crews were there doing some work as I was taking pics.

As I was leaving Wilmore I saw a train headed toward Lexington. There's a rural crossing near a curve that I always thought would make a nice pic if I could catch a train headed in the right direction. This one was not only headed in that direction, but moving at a speed I felt like I could beat the 7 miles or so to the crossing. I arrived with less than 5 minutes to spare. Plenty of time to park, unpack, and get set up.

Not a bad day. 2 pics I've been wanting for a while, and best of all, A LOT OF RELAXATION!!!

Stay-cation Photo Safari Day 1

For a number of reasons I decided to take my vacation this summer and stay home. Instead of traveling I'm exploring the photographic opportunities of Central Kentucky. My goal is to take 1000 pictures this week. Today I shot 223. Not a bad start. Here are the best of the bunch.

Included in the group are Paris, Lawrenceburg, and some outside Versailles. Lawrenceburg was my favorite. It was my first visit to this charming town. Lots of historic buildings and homes. And the people were very friendly. I may go back later this week when I visit Frankfort.

Danville in the Spring

Train Spotting May 08

I had a few hours to kill today and decided to head to Danville. It's very difficult to shoot from the car while driving, but a few were worth sharing. The pic of the day, the one that made the trip (and the gas) worth while is the caboose. I love the colors and the rust. I haven't seen a caboose in the wild in years and years. This was a real treat.

Wilmore, Ky Trainspotting

Train Spotting April '08

I can't believe I haven't posted any new photos in months! My wife and I had our first child in November. I'm sure you can guess the subject of all my photos over the past few months. But now I'm back to my favorite, uh make that second favorite subject: Trains!

These photos were taken at the crossing in Wilmore, Ky. I spent many hours here watching, and waiting for, trains when I was a student at Asbury College.
